ANCHORS Academy is a private Christian umbrella school started in 2000 in an effort to assist parents educate children by home-based, parent-directed discipleship.  A ministry of Souls Harbor Ministries,  ANCHORS Academy began with four families.  Today, we have over 200 students  enrolled from 13 counties in extreme Southwestern Virginia.  Our families have chosen to homeschool for a myriad of reasons, from poor academic performance in the traditional school setting, to religious conviction to provide education in the home.  Under the guidance of their parents, many of our students are achieving academic goals once thought impossible for them, and are overcoming labels attached in their previous school experience.  Children who have started homeschooling in the very early grades are out pacing their peers in traditional and government schools.

We feel that God has led us into establishing ANCHORS Academy for "such a time as this."  Our parents are seeing Christ nurtured in the lives of their children as they strive to reconcile the hearts and minds of their children to God in every aspect of their lives, including academics.

Policy Manual

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

ANCHORS Academy is a private school umbrella administered by Souls Harbor Ministries, providing third-party accountability to families wishing to shepherd their children through home-based, parent-directed discipleship. Through the homeschool format ANCHORS Academy encourages and reinforces the biblical basis of education found in Deuteronomy 6:4-8:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”
It is our desire that graduates of ANCHORS Academy enter their adult lives with a solid Christian worldview and an unshakable Christian faith.
ANCHORS Academy encourages and ministers to parents so that they in turn can minister to and educate their children in a loving, godly home. Our goal is to realize in all enrolled students growth in four areas defined in Luke 2:52, "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."
• Wisdom is akin to academics: Wisdom begins with respect for the Lord (Psalm 111:10 ). When our knowledge of God is applied in academics, wisdom will be the result.
• Stature is physical growth. Physical fitness should be part of the daily routine in addition to healthful diet and good personal grooming habits. Our bodies are the “temple of the Lord” and are to be maintained as such. (I Corinthians 3:16-17)
• Favor with God is spiritual growth. It is our desire that children grow in grace and in knowledge of the Lord. Through home education children should gain better understanding of who God is and how He relates to their lives.
• Favor with Man is the social aspect of our lives. Attendance at church functions, local homeschool support group functions and other events will help children become comfortable with peers, adults and younger children alike.

Statement of Faith
We believe:
A. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, the product of holy men of old who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit; the New Covenant as recorded in the New Testament, we accept as our infallible guide in matters pertaining to conduct and doctrine. (II Tim. 3:16; II Peter 1:2)
B. Our God is one, but manifested in three persons; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Philippians 2:6; Matthew 3:16-17)
C. Man is a created being, made in the likeness and image of God, but through Adam’s transgression and fall, sin came in to the world. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was manifested to undo the works of the devil and gave His life and shed His blood to redeem and restore man back to God. (Romans 5:12, Romans 3:23, Romans 3:9-10, I John 3:8, Galatians 3:13-14)
D. Salvation is the gift of God to man, separate from works and the law, and is made operative by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, producing works acceptable to God (Ephesians 2:8)
E. Man’s first step toward salvation is Godly sorrow that works repentance. The new birth is necessary to all man, and when fulfilled produces eternal life.
(II Corinthians 7:10, I John 5:12, John 3:3-5)
F. Both the saved and the lost will be bodily resurrected. The saved will be resurrected to the everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord; the lost will be resurrected to judgment and everlasting punishment. (I Thes. 4:17, Hebrews 9:27)

Application and Enrollment
Application for enrollment in ANCHORS Academy is open to all Christian families committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and who are in agreement with our procedures, policies and standards. ANCHORS Academy does not discriminate against nor exclude families from enrollment in its programs and activities based on race, color, nationality, or
ethnic origin. However, because the school is a religious organization, ANCHORS Academy does reserve the right to discriminate in areas of religious belief and affiliations. Therefore, ANCHORS Academy is not obligated to accept those who may not meet admission requirements.
ANCHORS Academy fully endorses the Biblical standards that believe the Bible to the inspired Word of God. Any family not adhering to Biblical standards in the home will be subject to suspension or expulsion by the Advisory Board. A thorough review by the Board will be necessary before reinstatement may occur.

Registration is open year around. Our home school year begins July 1st and ends June 30th. Each child is required to attend a minimum of 180 days per year. Students in K-Grade 2 will complete most school days in 1½ - 2 hours. Students in grades 3-12 must complete at least four hours of school work per day, though students are not limited to textbooks or on-site studies. Credit may be given for field trips and other family learning activities, such as visits to historic museums, cultural events, libraries, etc. Parents who live their lives according to Deuteronomy 6:7 will more than fulfill their obligations. “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
While a homeschool education is very concentrated, and more can be accomplished in less time when parents and students are working one-on-one (one hour of homeschool equals four hours of traditional classroom time), there is a limit that can be accomplished within one school year without sacrificing a thorough and well-rounded education. No student may complete more than two years of work within one school year unless permission is granted by the Administrator.

If a student has experienced suspension it is the responsibility of the parent to include such information in the enrollment process.

Testing
All students are tested each year. We have chosen to administer the Stanford Achievement Test for several reasons. A national standardized test, the Stanford is a good indicator of students’ educational strengths and weaknesses. Taking this test does not place students in a pass-fail situation; it merely lets the parents know of areas that may need to be boosted the following school year. This test is used widely by government schools, private schools and homeschools, and has a very good reputation. By testing with the Stanford, we place ourselves in comparison to other types of schools, and are thus able to defend our higher scores because we have used the same test and the test is administered by someone other than the parents. This takes away all arguments that we make things “easy” for our students. We score higher on the same test given to other educational institutions because we teach for mastery of the subject.
Testing dates will be set for April. If you child is unable to be present for the specified testing date, a $25 fee will be charged to set a make-up test date.
Students enrolled in Grade 12 may be exempted from the Stanford Achievement Test if they take the SAT or ACT college entrance exam and forward a copy of the scores to ANCHORS Academy.
